Which Type of employer are YOU?

Thinking of hiring a domestic helper in Singapore? Great! But before you jump into browsing profiles, the key question is: Which Type of Employer Are you?

Much like the popular personality-types in Myers-Briggs’ MBTI, finding out type of Employer are you plays a HUGE role in whether a new-to-Singapore or experienced FDW will be a better fit. Let’s explore:

Type 1: The Hands-On Employer

    • You thrive on: Structure, clear instructions, and having things done a certain way.

    • Your ideal day: Knowing exactly what to expect from your helper, minimal surprises. You want things to be done in the a particular way, absolutely no deviations at all.

    • Your helper match: A New-to-Singapore helper works great for you because you are able to provide clear instructions in how you want things to be done exactly and will not bring any past habits or ways of doing things from a previous employment to your place.

If you are considering an experienced maid, do make sure that you communicate your requirements clearly before hiring to ensure that the helper knows what to expect if she were to join your household.

Why this works: You’re providing a well-defined environment where a new-to-Singapore helper can excel. They have not worked elsewhere previously and thus would not bring along any previous ways of doing things that may frustrate you.

Type 2: The Collaborative Employer

    • You thrive on: Open communication, flexibility, and building relationships.

    • Your ideal day: Working alongside your helper, sharing tasks, and having a friendly dynamic.

    • Your helper match: Depending on your specific needs, either an experienced MDW or new-to-Singapore MDW would be suited for your household as you are flexible and are open to consider incorporating different ways of doing things so long it is efficient and beneficial.

Why this works: You’re creating a space for mutual learning and growth. Your helper will appreciate your guidance and become integrated into your family’s way of life and may introduce ways of doing something that your probably never thought of before!

Type 3: The “I’ll leave it to you” Employer

You thrive on: Delegating tasks, having free time, and minimal household stress. You are comfortable giving the helper autonomy in decision-making – you trust your helper to make judgement calls about grocery shopping or handling unexpected situations. You believe in being clear about overall expectations but not overly prescriptive.

Your ideal day: Coming home to a clean house and a prepared meal, without having to micromanage.

Your helper match: An experienced maid because she is likely able to function independently with minimal supervision. She has probably also adapted to the way of life in Singapore and is able to take the bus and MRT to fetch your kids, go to Sheng Shiong or Cold Storage to get groceries and help to receive your parcel from Shopee – skipping all the need to introduce what is EZ-link card or how to pick up a take-away from the coffeeshop. That said, it is still important to at least orientate the helper (a must in my view, for all helpers), so she knows your expectations and “standard” that you want.

The Takeaway:

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Reflect on your personality, lifestyle, and expectations. This self-awareness will guide you towards the right helper choice and a more harmonious household – remember that your helper is an individual with their own preferences and working styles. Open communication and a willingness to understand their needs will contribute to a successful working relationship.
