Is it mandatory?
It is a requirement for employers to send their foreign domestic workers (FDW) for a medical screening every 6 months.
Why is it so often?
We often get questions on the why the need for a medical examination so frequently, because on a personal level, most individuals will just got for one annual body check up at best.
While the frequency of the medical examination is not explicitly mentioned anywhere, we deduce that it is primarily for the purpose of protecting you and your family as well as our community at large by detecting the occurrence of any illness in timely manner.
What Tests are done during the FDW 6 Monthly Medical Examination?
The tests to be done are stated in the 6ME letters sent by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM)
Tests for/Frequency
- Pregnancy/Every 6 months
- Syphilis/Every 6 months
- HIV/Every 2 years
- Tuberculosis (TB)/Once, upon 2 years of stay in Singapore
To Bring (when going for 6ME)
- FDW to bring her Work Permit Card
- 6ME Letter
Requirements
The 6ME tests results must be certified by a doctor that is registered in Singapore.
As employers, you are required to pay for the 6ME and any medical expenses arising from it.
Is there a Deadline for the 6 monthly medical examination?
Yes, there is a a due date that your maid’s 6 monthly medical examination has to be done. It is usually stated on the 6ME notification letter and you are required to send your maid for her 6 monthly medical examination before the due date.
Waiver for maid’s 6 monthly medical examination
Another frequent question that we receive is: Am I still required to send my maid for the 6 monthly medical check up if employment is ending soon?
In such a scenario, you can choose not to send her for the 6 monthly examination if you are sending her back within one month after the 6ME is due.
If you intend to keep your helper more than one month after her 6 monthly medical is due, you are required to apply for a waiver.
The follow documents are required to be submitted in applying for the waiver:
1. FDW’s Full Name, Work Permit Number, Date of Birth
2. A copy of your FDW’s Travel document (i.e. Air Ticket)
3. Your Particulars: NRIC/FIN number, Residential Address, Contact number.
What should I Do if my maid fails her 6 monthly medical check up?
If your Maid fails her 6 monthly medical examination, you must cancel her work permit and repatriate her immediately.
You may also wish to notify your maid agency to keep them in the loop should you face such a scenario.
